BHA Media and Mocha Publishing join forces to fill gap left in hair industry event calendar

BHA Media and Mocha Publishing are joining together to produce two new events, Hair Festival and Australian Hair Industry Awards (Creative), to be held over the 2021 Queen’s Birthday weekend in Sydney.

BHA Media is a subsidiary of The Intermedia Group, which publishes INSTYLE magazine and styleicons.com.au. Mocha Publishing publishes HairBiz magazine and the Australian Hair Industry Awards (AHIAs).

Previously, the Hair Expo Australia event and Hair Expo Awards organised by Reed Exhibitions Australia, was held over the June long weekend. However, Reed recently chose to discontinue the event.

In a statement on the Hair Expo Australia website, Reed Exhibitions Managing Director Brian Thomas said “Reed Exhibitions has been undergoing a thorough and extensive review of our entire events portfolio in order to reshape our company to maintain a strong and progressive business for the future.

“I regret to announce that it was decided during this review that Hair Expo Australia will be discontinued and no longer be a part of Reed Exhibitions’ calendar of events.”

BHA Media and Mocha Publishing said their collaboration on the new Hair Festival and Australian Hair Industry Awards (Creative) will honour a “traditional legacy” and breathe “new life into a changing world”, while leveraging their duel experience to deliver a multifaceted event that meets modern hairdressing values.

Taking place on Sunday 13 June and Monday 14 June 2021, the events plan to offer all of the activities the community has come to expect from its dedicated hair weekend.

Presented by BHA Media, a two-day marketplace will showcase exclusive innovations from a variety of hair and beauty brands, acting as a refreshed, product-focused and industry-specific buying experience.

The event will also include a two-day business program, a ‘festival style’ evening networking event on the Sunday night, and the Australian Hair Industry Awards (AHIAs, Creative) on the Monday night.

“The June long weekend has a special place in the hearts of the hairdressing industry and Hair Festival will capture that historic energy while offering refreshed, relevant new formats and ideas across education and the marketplace component,” said Simon Grover, Managing Director of The Intermedia Group.

“Every facet of the weekend, from what you can learn, what you can buy and how you can network, will be tailored to suit the modern hairdresser.”

The AHIAs Creative, presented by Mocha Publishing, will allow hairdressers to compete in creative awards categories. With a new awards format, the categories will reflect all aspects of hairdressing with photographic, creative ability and written submissions, complementing Mocha Publishing’s existing Australia Hair Industry Business Awards, which is held separately.

“We are 100 per cent committed and excited for the launch of the new awards held on the Queen’s Birthday weekend, June 2021, where the industry as a whole will celebrate Creative Excellence across the entire hair industry,” said Linda Woodhead, owner of Mocha Publishing.

“We have worked very hard at becoming a respected and trusted brand and understand that taking on the responsibility of running these awards is a great honour, which we do with humility, gratitude and pride.”
