Intermedia’s Bars & Clubs goes digital

After 18 years of publication as a print magazine, Intermedia’s Bars & Clubs has relaunched as digital-only with a new website and a new Editor.

Bars & Clubs showcases Australia’s bar industry, covering trends, ideas, innovations, issues, bartender and venue profiles, spirit and beer reviews, cocktail recipes, new product launches and industry events.

Andy Young, Editor of Intermedia’s sister website The Shout, has been appointed to Editor of Bars & Clubs.

Intermedia Group Publisher Paul Wootton told Niche Publishing News that the move aims to ensure the publication remains relevant to its readers in the changing landscape of the industry.

“The new site means we can have a bit more fun with some of the content, injecting more personality into our articles and making it more relevant to the younger bar professional demographic, while still allowing us to deal with the serious issues and challenges this sector faces.

“The site also looks great on mobile, which is the platform of choice for many Bars & Clubs readers,” he said.

Sister website The Shout is tagged as “the leading online news service for Australia’s beer, wine, spirits and hospitality industries”. Wootton said that the two sites have been kept separate to maintain Bars & Clubs unique identity: “The bar community is a very distinctive audience, different in many ways from the retailer and hotelier readers The Shout primarily caters to.”

Wootton said that a new fortnightly e-newsletter called ‘Spotlight’ will be introduced as part of the Bars & Clubs digital offering. This e-news will be in addition to the brand’s regular weekly e-newsletter, and will have a themed focus, dig deeper into topics and offer longer-form content.

The main revenue drivers for the Bars & Clubs digital brand are display advertising, sponsored content and solus emails.

Bars & Clubs is also co-presenter of the annual Australian Liquor Industry Awards (ALIA) – the gala industry event, attended by over 600 members of the hospitality industry and recognises the top performers across all categories, as voted for by the trade.

First established in 1968, Intermedia is one of Australia’s largest B2B publishers, producing print and digital publications, and events across 12 markets. The publisher employs over 140 editors, journalists, developers, sales staff and event specialists.
