New Zealand magazines: sporting, real estate and motoring titles experience growth

More than 2 million New Zealanders read magazines in 2019, with most sporting magazines in the country experiencing readership growth.

Nearly 2.1 million New Zealanders aged 14+ (52.3 per cent) read magazines whether in print or online either via the web or an app.

The findings come from Roy Morgan’s New Zealand Single Source survey of 6,547 New Zealanders aged 14+ over the 12 months to December 2019.

The market research company said that New Zealand’s most widely read magazine remains driving magazine AA Directions, with a readership of 482,000 over the past year, well ahead of generalist titles NZ Woman’s Day on a readership of 251,000 and current affairs magazine New Zealand Listener on 233,000.

Most niche magazines within the sporting category experienced growth, including NZ Fishing News (19,000 readers) NZ Adventure (11,000), NZ Horse & Pony (9,000), NZ Outdoor Hunting (9,000), and NZ Rugby World (1,000).

Real estate magazines also performed well with NZ Property Investor by increasing its readership by 5,000, and NZ Property Press growing by an impressive 47,000 readers.

Motoring titles NZ Trucking also increased by 4,000 readers, and NZ Classic Car by 2,000 readers.
