Publisha subscription service launches: providing technical and business expertise for digital publishers

A new subscription service for digital publishers, offering on-demand access to technical and business expertise, has launched.

A collaboration between Ben May, founder of publishing technical agency The Code Company, and Mumbrella co-founder and former CEO Martin Lane, Publisha provides independent media owners and their senior staff with expert advice on all aspects of publishing.

Subscriptions start at $199 per month and include a monthly video call with a publishing consultant, weekly email questions, and personalised coaching. Subscribers benefit from practical advice on a range of essential publishing topics including website development, email marketing, content, sales, social media, events, training, finance and business.

In addition to advising on the day-to-day needs of media owners, Publisha offers technical insights on publishing software and strategic advice on building, growing and selling publishing businesses.

While May’s expertise is technical – he runs a technically advanced WordPress development agency for digital publishers – Lane’s is strategic, having built and sold publishing and events businesses in the UK, Australia and Asia.

Over the last decade, May has worked with over 50 different digital publishers, with varying challenges. May’s  passion for helping smaller publishers navigate the complex technical ecosystem is what inspired him to co-found Publisha.

Lane is a publishing entrepreneur and co-founder of B2B media and marketing platform Mumbrella and legal cannabis media brand Cannabiz. He is a former board member of Publishers Australia and the Australian Interactive Media Industry Association and led the sale of Mumbrella to Diversified Communications in December 2017.

Publisha also has access to a global team of talent with expertise in every aspect of digital publishing.

Lane said “I know from experience how many variables publishers have to consider every day, whether they’re in start-up mode, experiencing growing pains or planning an exit. Our aim is to help them avoid the pitfalls and only spend money when they absolutely have to.”

May said Publisha will empower emerging publishers to own and operate their own platform and reduce the need for external agencies or large in-house tech teams.

He added “Publishing is hard work. Business owners are time poor and often isolated from their peers so getting support is difficult. It’s hard to keep up with all the technical tools on offer and to know which will deliver positive ROI for your business.”
