The Public Interest Journalism Initiative (PIJI) is looking for a full-time Executive Director to work closely with the PIJI Board to take the organisation to the next level.
Public interest journalism is defined as reporting information that the public is entitled to know, and which holds authority to account. The PIJI describes it as a “vital pillar of Australian democracy”.
The PIJI has eight board members, including niche publishers Eric Beecher (Private Media), and Karen Mahlab (Pro Bono Australia).
The organisation aims to bring attention to the state of public interest journalism to help shape the policies and actions needed to support its future by establishing a network to generate ideas; analyse existing research and business developments within the space; stimulate policy proposals and sustainable business models; and, engage directly with key political decision makers, media industry players, as well as business, academic and community leaders.
“Upheavals in the Australian news media landscape are leading to vastly reduced coverage of key areas like our councils, parliaments and courts. Local media organisations are rapidly disappearing along with thousands of journalists’ jobs,” the organisation states on its website.
Candidates for the Executive Director position will use their strategic and policy leadership skills to grow the PIJI. They will have extensive policy and advocacy experience, and a proven track record in team management and results-driven leadership.
The role is set to be based in Melbourne.
