Island Magazine secures funding to continue in 2020

The Tasmanian-based not-for-profit Island Magazine has secured funding to resume publishing activity in 2020.

Established in 1979, Island Magazine is a print-only literary magazine of essays, short stories, poetry and art from Australian and international new, emerging and established writers.

In September last year, Chair Geoff Heriot said that the magazine would likely cease publishing after failing to win a renewal of its four-year funding arrangement with Arts Tasmania.

However, the team has now announced that it is confident of publishing two issues during 2020, assuming that it can raise sufficient revenue through sales, subscriptions, and donations

“Success with any of our pending grant applications is required to achieve any additional publishing program, and we will continue to apply for further grants as the opportunities present, including the next Arts Tasmania funding round,” a statement on Island Magazine’s website said.

The magazine has also welcomed three new writers to its editorial team: Lisa Gorton as Poetry Editor, Ben Walter as Fiction Editor, and Anna Spargo-Ryan as Nonfiction Editor.

Judith Abell remains the magazine’s Art Features Editor and Vern Field continues to head up the team as Managing Editor.
